All About the Visa for Botswana

If you like the sound of discovering the wilderness of Botswana, you will be pleased to know that getting a tourist visa to travel to this magnificent country is straightforward.

In August 2021, Botswana announced a new e-Visa (Electronic Visa) system, which is very welcome news for visitors who previously had to go through complicated bureaucratic procedures. In terms of your length of stay in the country, there are 2 e-Visa options available:

  • Single Entry, which is valid for 30 days.
  • Multiple Entry, which is valid for 90 days.

Dozens of nationalities are eligible for this online travel document, including citizens of China, India, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Pakistan and the UAE.

This new procedure significantly reduces the issuance time of a travel document that previously took around 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, you can apply and receive your document from the comfort of your own home – what more could you ask for?

Meanwhile, Botswana also grants visa-free access to over a hundred countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and most of Europe. Visitors under the visa-waiver program can stay for up to 90 days within any 12-month period.

Keep reading to learn the requirements to apply for the eVisa if you’re eligible, or the regulations to enter if you’re visa-exempt!

What Is the Difference Between a Botswana e-Visa and a Visa Waiver?

Travelling to Botswana has never been easier! The new eVisa means that anyone who does require prior authorisation before travelling can apply online in a few simple steps. The electronic system means easier applications and faster processing times, so you can spend more time on more fun things, like choosing your ideal safari tour.

And what about everyone else? Well, if you aren’t eligible for an e-Visa, it means you are exempt altogether and you can travel to Botswana whenever you like without any additional permits necessary. Just make sure you check that your passport has at least 6 months validity remaining before you go, as you don’t want to be turned back just as you arrive.

When you apply for your travel document, you will be asked to choose between 2 options: a Single entry permit valid for 30 days, and a Multiple Entry permit valid for 90 days. If you wish to extend your stay, you should visit the nearest immigration office while there to discuss your options.
Among other things, the government’s official website outlines the country’s entry requirements and policies. However, you can find much of the same information on this page, written in a clear and concise manner to help you navigate all the bureaucracy.
The approval time depends on the processing speed you select at the time of applying. Byevisa offers 3 service options: Standard, Rapid and Highly Rapid. If you don’t remember which one you selected, you can check the email confirmation we sent you.
If your passport has expired or is due to expire in the near future, it’s essential that you renew it before you apply for your travel document or jump on a flight to Botswana. Remember, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in the country with 3 blank pages.
No, there isn’t. US citizens don’t need to get any additional documents or permits to travel to Botswana. All you need is a passport valid for at least 6 months with at least 3 blank pages in it.
Just like American citizens, if you are of Canadian nationality, then you are eligible to gain entry into the country with just your passport. Nonetheless, it’s a good idea to read all the terms and policies we have outlined on this page.
It generally doesn’t take too long to process the new Electronic Visa, but it’s always a good idea to apply a little in advance. If you need a last minute travel document, you can use our Highly Rapid service.
Yes. Although your document will be linked to your passport electronically, we always recommend printing a copy and taking it with you when you travel.
If you fill in the application form carefully and with the correct information, it’s quite rare for an application to be denied. If this happens, contact us. We'll identify what needs to be amended in your application, so you can apply again. What’s more, if the Botswana government rejects your application, we’ll refund the fees in full.
First of all, check if either of your passports falls under the visa-waiver program. If not, then just choose which passport you want to use for the trip and start the application process. The most important thing is that you travel with the same passport you used for your application.
