All About the Burundi Visa

This tiny African country with tall peaks and idyllic lakes has been marked by internal conflict throughout the 21st century, so we recommend you look into the latest advice issued by your government on travelling here before booking your flights.

Are you thinking of visiting Burundi? On this page, you can find everything you need to know about Burundi’s entry policies.

To visit the country for tourism, different regulations apply to different nationalities. That being said, the vast majority of nationalities, including the USA, the UK, and all of Europe, will need to get a standard visa to enter the country, issued by an embassy prior to arrival.

In 2015, a Visa on Arrival (VoA) system was reinstated. This means that 17 countries, including Egypt, Seychelles and Zimbabwe, can obtain a travel permit from Bujumbura Airport if you are travelling on duty.

What’s more, citizens of 6 neighbouring countries, including Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, can visit for 90 days without needing a travel permit.

Read on to find out which policies apply to your passport and what you need to do to visit this country.

What Is the Difference Between a Burundi Visa on Arrival vs a Standard Tourist Visa?

There are a handful of countries that are eligible for a VoA. However, to obtain this permit you must first get an entry authorisation letter issued by the authorities of Burundi. The letter is to certify that you are travelling to Burundi on duty, so you won’t be able to get one if you are visiting as a tourist.

Once you have this paper, you can fly to Bujumbura Airport and show them the letter in order to get a VoA. With the VoA, you can stay in the country for up to 30 days. Moreover, diplomatic passport holders can get a 30-day VoA without the authorisation letter.

On the other hand, most nationalities will need to get a standard visa to enter the country, which can be obtained from one of Burundi’s diplomatic missions worldwide. In this case, you will be able to choose between a 30-day and a 90-day travel permit.

Finally, if you are from one of the lucky countries that is visa-exempt, you will be able to travel to Burundi with only a passport, and you can stay for up to 90 days!

Burundi Visa Application Process

There are 2 types of application process, depending on which entry policies apply to you:

VoA

If you can get a VoA, then the process is very simple and straightforward. You will first need to get an authorisation letter from the embassy before your trip. Then, once you arrive at Bujumbura airport, simply show the letter to the authorities to be granted a VoA.

Standard visa

If you require a travel document from the embassy, you may be able to either submit your application and collect your approved document in person or do it by post. Please note that the postal service may not be available in every country, so it is essential you check with your nearest embassy whether this option is available.

No matter whether you are applying by post or in person, the process is the same:

  1. Collect all the required documents (see section below).
  2. Print and complete the application form.
  3. Submit your application at the embassy or send it to the embassy by post (don’t forget to include a pre-paid return envelope).
  4. Wait for your application to be processed.
