All About the ETIAS Authorisation Belgium

Please note that the ETIAS is a new system that is due to enter into force in late 2022, and becomes obligatory from 2023. Byevisa has compiled all of the current information to explain what it is, how it will work and how you can apply for one once the system is up and running.

Planning to visit the home of the European Union? With its stunning architecture and its reputation for creating the world’s best chocolate, you are in for a treat.

Until recently, American, British, Australian, Canadian and Japanese tourists, as well as those from around 60 other countries, didn’t require a travel pass to visit this country and other places in Europe.

However, as of late 2022 these citizens are eligible, and as of 2023 are obliged, to present a visa waiver. This new electronic system, which is speeding up processing times across the globe, is known as the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System).

How Does This Work?

You need to apply for this if you are planning to travel to Belgium, or indeed any of the 26 Member States that form the Schengen zone, for business, medical treatment, tourism or transit purposes.

Applications can be processed online and if you do it via Byevisa’s user-friendly portal, it only takes around 10 minutes.

Once your application has been approved, the pass will be valid for up to 3 years. During this time, you can not only visit beautiful Belgium, you can also enter any Schengen Area member state multiple times for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Please note that this pass will not allow you to enter the UK and Ireland, for example, as although they are part of Europe, these countries aren’t in the Schengen zone.

Planning to be in the country for longer? There are some circumstances where you need another type of visa. These include:

  • If you are immigrating.
  • If you are going there to study.
  • If you are going to move there permanently for work.

If this is the case, please seek advice from your nearest consulate or embassy.

Difference Between the ETIAS Belgium and a Belgium Visa

So what is the difference between a traditional Belgium visa and this new system?

The ETIAS authorisation is for visits to countries in the Schengen zone, which includes Belgium and 25 others, for a duration of up to 90 days during any 180-day period.

This means, for example, that you can’t explore the ‘flat country’ for 90 days, pop over to London to soak in the sights (the UK isn’t in the Schengen Area) and then return to Belgium for a further 90 days during the same 180-day period.

What type of trip is this documentation for? Well, the Belgium ETIAS is for short-term trips including:

  • Business trips.
  • Tourist visits.
  • Medical treatment.
  • Transit.

Do You Need a Visa to Go to Belgium?

If you are a citizen of a country that up until recently was exempt from requiring a visa to travel to Europe (such as the USA, UK, Canada or Australia), you need to apply for this pass if you want to visit the continent.

Unsure if this applies to you? Use our eligibility checker tool to find out.

Citizens of countries that either aren’t eligible for the ETIAS authorisation, or aren’t nationals of EU or Schengen Area Member States, need to apply for a Schengen Visa.

If this applies to you, then the type of document you need to apply for depends on the purpose of your trip. More information about the process for applying for a Belgium Schengen Visa can be found here.

ETIAS Application Process for Belgium

Getting your hands on your Belgium visa is a simple process. All you need to do is provide us with the following information:

  • Your personal details – name, gender, date of birth etc.
  • Your passport information – including the issue date and expiry date. Please note, your passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months after your entry date.
  • A current email address.

You also need to:

  • Answer a few simple health and security questions. This is nothing to worry about; it is just to check your details against the EU’s secure databases (Europol, Interpol, SIS and VIS).
  • Have a credit or debit card or the login for a PayPal account. You will be charged an X USD fee per applicant, as well as a handling charge depending on the processing speed you select.

You can do all of this in approximately 10 minutes from any electronic device, saving yourself a trip to the embassy to fill out a load of forms. Once complete, you receive your valid travel authorisation by email in the processing time you selected. Your visa waiver is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.

The ETIAS is automatically linked to your passport, so when it is scanned by airline staff or at border control they’ll know right away that you’re authorised to travel. Want to be extra certain? Print a copy too from the email we send you!

Children under the age of 18 must obtain their own authorisation document; however, you can apply for them.

Remember to triple check all the information before hitting the ‘Submit’ button. Once submitted, we may not be able to amend your application if any errors are made. This means that you will have to pay the Belgian visa fees again if you need to reapply.

ETIAS Belgium FAQs

Still unsure about some of the details of your travel pass? The information below should answer any lingering questions about Belgium visa requirements ahead of your trip.

Yes, this travel pass allows you to visit all 26 Member States of the Schengen zone, along with those that are not yet full members (Croatia, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania). Belgium is bordered by the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France, so there is plenty to discover close by!

Please note, this authorisation is not valid for every European country. For example, you cannot use it to visit the United Kingdom or Ireland. To see the full list of countries you can enter with this pass, please click here.
Good news - this travel pass allows multiple entries. It is valid for 3 years during which time you can visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days during any 180-day period. You don’t need to apply for authorisation every time you plan to travel to Brussels or another European destination.
The ETIAS authorisation is linked electronically to your passport, so technically this is not necessary - you just need to show your passport at border control. However, it is always better to be safe than sorry! We recommend that you print out a copy of all travel documentation just in case.
No, the EU's new visa waiver system is scheduled to go online in late 2022 and becomes obligatory from 2023. In the meantime, we've provided all the information you need when the ETIAS launch day arrives!
You can renew your travel pass when your existing one has fewer than 120 days’ validity remaining. You can do this online from within the Schengen Zone. So if you’re on holiday in Belgium, there’s no need to leave to renew your authorisation!
Without a valid passport, your travel authorisation is invalid. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after your entry date. If you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETIAS as well.
If you have dual nationality, the process is the same. However, when you travel, make sure to take with you the identification document that you applied for the ETIAS with! Your authorisation is linked to that particular passport only.
This depends on which service you choose. With our Highly Rapid service, you can have it in your inbox in just X days. With our Rapid service, you receive it in X. If you opt for our Standard service it takes X days.
The official site is one of the places where you can find comprehensive information about the ETIAS Belgian Visa. Or alternatively, you can read all the relevant details right here on Byevisa’s website, in a simpler, more user-friendly format.
The ETIAS validity lasts up to 3 years, or until your passport expires if that is sooner. Your passport should have at least 6 months’ validity remaining from your date of entry into Belgium.
There is normally an X cost to apply for this documentation. However, there are a couple of exceptions:
  • People under 18 years of age.
  • People over 70.
If you fall into either of these categories then the ETIAS Belgium is free for you, although you still need to pay the processing fee for us to deal with the paperwork on your behalf. The rate for this depends on how quickly you need the travel pass! We offer an express Highly Rapid option (X days) to make sure your authorisation is with you in time for your trip.
In the unlikely event that your application is denied, we will get in touch and let you know the reason where possible. Make sure to fill in the Belgium visa application form as accurately as possible to reduce the likelihood of this happening.
