With its palm trees, white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, the idyllic island of Mauritius is the perfect place for a getaway. So how do we get you there? There are different types of tourist visas depending on your nationality and how long you wish to stay. In particular:
- You may be visa-exempt.
- You could be eligible for the new online Premium visa for long-term stays.
- You might require a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or a traditional embassy visa.
Fortunately, the entry policies on this island are pretty flexible and there are 114 Mauritius visa-free countries for visits of up to 90 days. This includes nationals of the USA, UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India.
What’s more, in 2020, the government here introduced a new premium visa to help citizens of the same 114 nationalities who want to stay longer in the country. Designed with tourists, remote workers, digital nomads and pensioners in mind, this allows you to swim in the ocean and soak up the sunshine for 1 whole year, so long as you can demonstrate the financial means to support yourself. You can apply online for this extended travel pass with Byevisa in just a few simple steps!
Meanwhile, citizens of another 60 countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan can get a VoA which grants you a stay of 60 days. Lastly, only 16 nationalities require a pre-arranged visa from an embassy.
On this page, we look at what each nationality needs to visit Mauritius and all the processes involved in getting the different permits.

What Is the Difference Between the Visa Exemption, the Premium Visa, the VoA and the Embassy Visa?
The main differences are the number of days granted to stay with each authorisation and the process to get them. Here’s a summary of each type:
- The Visa Exemption allows citizens of 114 countries to stay on this beautiful island for up to 90 days without prior permission.
- The Premium option allows visa-exempt nationalities to stay up to 1 year, and the entire application process can be completed online.
- The Visa on Arrival (VoA) is for nationalities who aren’t visa-exempt, and you get it upon arrival at the airport. This document allows stays of up to 60 days in most cases (14 days for 5 select countries).
- The Embassy Visa is also for citizens of countries that aren’t visa-exempt, and how long you can stay varies depending on where you apply and your nationality. Moreover, you need to apply in person at an embassy.
Please see the section below to check which nationalities are eligible for each of these authorisations.
