A visa is required. We cannot assist in processing this document, but we provide instructions on how to apply.

All About the Paraguay Visa

Are you interested in visiting the heart of South America on your next adventure? If so, then you’ve come to the right place, as Byevisa has all the information on travel to Paraguay visa requirements.

Currently, nationals from 60 countries including the United Kingdom and European Union Member States can enjoy Paraguay visa-free travel. This means that a valid passport (or in some cases, just your national ID card) gives you the key to exploring the dry wilderness of Chaco or the Spanish relics of Areguá for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

If you’re visiting from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia or Taiwan, you have the option of applying for a Paraguay Visa on Arrival (VoA) right at Asunción’s international airport. This means no trip to the embassy beforehand, as the payment of the fee and issuing of the authorisation takes place all at once at the airport’s immigration centre.

At this time, there is no e-Visa system in place for this country. However, if you don’t qualify for visa exemption or a VoA, we’re here to help with a guide to the application process. Let us worry about the Paraguay visa policy, so that you have more time to brush up on your Spanish and Guaraní in preparation for your Paraguayan adventure.

Paraguay Visa Requirements and Eligibility

A total of 60 countries do not require an entry authorisation to explore Paraguay’s Jesuit ruins and former Spanish colonial cities. All you’ll need is a passport valid at least 6 months past your travel dates and with at least 1 blank page for the Paraguay visa stamp.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Taiwan
  • United States

To obtain your VoA, there’s no need to fill out any paperwork beforehand. You just need to make sure you carry proof of accommodation and a return ticket. The VoA fee depends on your nationality and can be paid in US dollars. Unfortunately, payment by credit card is not accepted.

Paraguay Visa Application Process

If you didn’t find your nationality in one of the lists above, you’ll need to apply for an entry authorisation at an embassy or diplomatic mission prior to your trip. To do this, there are 4 main steps to follow:

  1. Contact your nearest embassy and request an appointment to drop off your documents.
  2. Pay the application fee beforehand by money order or cashier’s cheque and save the proof of payment to submit with your application.
  3. Collect all the remaining documents needed for your application. This includes your passport and another form of national ID, the completed application form, and a passport-size picture.
  4. Present your application in person on the day of your appointment and leave your passport at the embassy while everything is processed.

That’s it! About a week after your appointment, the consulate will get in touch with you at the email address provided on your application.

Next, pack up your bags, as once your entry authorisation is issued it will need to be activated within 90 days or 6 months, depending on the embassy that issued the travel pass. That is to say that, once you hold your valid travel permit, you’ll have a limited amount of time to enter the country and receive the entry stamp. This activated visa will then be valid for Multiple-Entries for up to 90 days.

Paraguay Visa Forms and Documents

Nationals from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan can choose between applying for a VoA at the airport or for a consular visa in their country of residence. In both cases, the cost is the same.

If applying through an embassy, you may have the option of dropping off your documents in person or sending them through certified mail with a tracking number and pre-paid return postage.

All other nationalities must apply for their authorisation in person.

As part of your application, you’ll need to collect these documents:

  • Your original passport, valid at least 6 months past your travel dates.
  • The completed and signed application form (available on the embassy website).
  • A 2×2 inch passport photo, in colour and in front of a white background.
  • Receipt of payment (money order or cashier’s cheque made out to the Consulate General of Paraguay).
  • A copy of your round-trip itinerary.
  • If you hold or have held an authorisation for a MERCOSUR or European Union country, you’ll need to include a copy of this.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (bank statements, a letter from your employer, etc.).
  • A document showing proof of residence (this can be a national ID or even a utility bill that states your name and current address).

In addition, to fill in the Paraguay visa application form, you’ll want to have this information at hand:

  • Your full name (this should be written exactly as it appears in your passport).
  • Date and place of birth.
  • Your email and contact number.
  • Your gender, hair colour, eye colour and height.
  • Your current occupation and work address.
  • Your marital status and the name of your spouse.
  • Passport number, place of issue and date of issue/expiry.
  • The full names of your mother and father.
  • Your proposed date of entry and departure.
  • The information of any friends or relatives in Paraguay.
  • Information on prior visits and visa applications.

How Much Does a Paraguay Visa Cost?

The Paraguay visa fee depends on your nationality and the embassy or diplomatic mission where you apply.

If you plan on obtaining a VoA, the prices are the same as for a consular visa and are as follows:

  • Australia – 135 USD
  • Canada – 150 USD
  • New Zealand – 140 USD
  • Taiwan – 100 USD
  • United States – 160 USD

Foreign travellers applying for their permit at an embassy in the United States, for example, will be charged 100 USD for their Multiple-Entry Paraguay tourist visa.

Paraguay Visa Status Check

To check the status of your document, you can reach out to the embassy’s consular section. Keep in mind, however, that some embassies do not give information about your application status.

After approximately 1 week, check your email. This is the primary way that embassies will contact you.

All other foreign visitors can obtain a Multiple-Entry authorisation that’s valid for 90 days.

It’s important to note that all entry authorisations should be activated within 90 days or 6 months of their issue, depending on the embassy. If you don’t enter the country within this time, you will have to start a new application.

Applications typically take 1 week to process. However, we would recommend contacting the embassy beforehand to request an appointment in the event that they are booking a couple of weeks out.
Tourists from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Oman, Qatar, Taiwan and the USA qualify for both consular authorisations and the VoA. The main difference is how you plan to travel.

The VoA is a quick and easy option if you plan on entering the country through the international airport in Asunción. If you plan on travelling around the region and entering the country via a land border, you’ll need to go the consular route.

If you are exempt from an entry permit, there is no need to print any document. It might be a good idea, however, to carry copies of your proof of accommodation and return ticket on hand.

Travellers planning on applying for an entry permit or Visa on Arrival are not required to print anything either; the permit will be fixed directly to your passport.

This document is processed in approximately 1 week.
If your passport is due to expire in less than 6 months, it’s possible that your entry will be refused at the airport or that your visa application will be denied.

Keep in mind that Multiple-Entry visas for visitors from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Oman, Qatar and Taiwan are valid until the expiration of your passport, so to get the most out of your document it may be worth it to renew beforehand.

If you are applying for a VoA, you’ll want to follow the instructions listed above carefully. As long as you are able to show proper documentation and pay the requested fee, there is little chance that your authorisation will be denied.

If you applied for your document at an embassy, the consular section can give you information on why your authorisation was denied and how to proceed.

If one of your nationalities is exempt from the travel authorisation, you may use this passport to travel. If neither is exempt, your embassy can tell you if it’s advantageous to apply with one over the other.
Yellow fever is present here and vaccinations are recommended, especially if you plan on travelling to other countries in the region. Mosquito-borne illnesses such as Zika, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya are all prevalent. We recommend talking to your doctor prior to your trip to ensure that you are well protected.
The currency here is the guaraní (PYG), which is also the name of one of the main indigenous tribes and of the local language. One USD is equivalent to about 7,000 PYG, so be prepared to handle some notes. Points of Sale (PoS) and ATMs are easily found in the capital but are few and far between in the more remote regions.
