All About the Visa for San Marino

San Marino is an independent state located in central Italy and is the smallest country in Europe. If you would like to visit the famous 3 towers of the old Medieval fortress and enjoy the breathtaking views, read this article carefully to find out about the visa requirements for San Marino.

As a tourist, you can stay in San Marino for 30 days. If you are staying with friends and family, you will need to report to the Foreigners Office within 24 hours of your arrival. If you are staying at a hotel or bed and breakfast, you won’t need to do anything for the first 10 days, but if you wish to stay longer you will need to report to the Foreigners Office and get a tourist permit.

Moreover, since San Marino is located in Italy you will need to comply with Italian visa requirements to visit this country, which means you will need to comply with Schengen zone regulations.

Italy is one of 26 European countries that are part of the Schengen zone, an area in which you can enjoy Freedom of Movement between all countries in this area. This also means that if you have a passport from a Schengen Member State, you can visit San Marino without any travel permit.

To enter the Schengen zone, you will either need an ETIAS waiver or a Schengen visa. The ETIAS is a new screening system, much like the American ESTA or the Canadian eTA, that you must apply for if you were previously visa-free for the Schengen zone. You will need to fill our a quick form online, and you will receive your travel pass by email thereafter. Countries that require an ETIAS for San Marino include the US, Israel and the United Kingdom.

On the other hand, countries that are not on the list of visa-free countries for the EU will need to get a Schengen visa from an embassy or consulate before travelling. The list of countries eligible for a Schengen visa includes South Africa, India and Thailand.

Read on to find out more about San Marino’s visa requirements.

What Is the Difference Between a San Marino ETIAS Visa Waiver vs Schengen Visa?

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new system that will be introduced in 2022 and becomes mandatory in 2023. It’s a travel document that must be obtained by all those nationalities that were previously visa-free for this area. Now, you will need to fill out our quick form online, and you will be sent your travel pass by email. This permit grants the visitor 90 days in any 180-day period and gives you access to all 26 member states of the Schengen zone.

On the other hand, the Schengen visa must be obtained from a European embassy or consulate. You will need to bring certain documents and forms to the diplomatic mission of the first country in the Schengen zone that you will be visiting, and you will be issued either a Single Entry or a Multiple Entry visa depending on what you request.
