Are you planning to visit Sierra Leone? Whether you want to experience the nightlife in the seaside capital Freetown, watch chimps play at Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary or relax at one of the spectacular beaches, it’s likely you will need to get a visa first.
Fortunately, in 2019, the government introduced a new online e-Visa (Electronic Visa), which can be acquired before arrival to avoid queues and delays at the border. Over 200 nationalities can apply for this electronic document, including the USA, UK, EU Member States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and India.
The eVisa permits visits of up to 30 days, and is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. It’s a Single Entry travel permit, so you can only enter and exit the country once.
On the other hand, 40 countries including South Africa and Madagascar aren’t currently eligible for this type of electronic document, and will need to get your travel permit from the nearest embassy.
Meanwhile, citizens of countries that are part of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are visa-exempt for Sierra Leone.
Whichever entry regulations apply to you, read on to learn more about the visa requirements for this country, and how to get your travel pass if you need one!

What Is the Difference Between a Standard Visa and the Electronic Version?
The main difference between these 2 documents is the process required to get them.
On the one hand, to get an eVisa the process is entirely online, so you can get it from the comfort of your home or anywhere else you may be. Then, the permit is sent by email, so you simply need to print it out, and you will be good to go! It’s quick and easy, and most countries worldwide can benefit from it.
On the other hand, some countries need to visit an embassy or consulate and go through the process of getting a standard visa stamped into their passport. This frequently takes longer and includes an appointment and interview at the embassy.
