All about the Canada Visa

The Canada eTA stands for Electronic Travel Authorisation. You’re required to obtain this Canada visitor visa if you’re arriving there by air, and you’re a citizen of eligible countries including the UK, France, Germany, Japan and Australia. US citizens are exempt. You do not need an eTA if you’re arriving by land or sea, such as if you’re entering by bus from the USA. If you’re from a country not eligible for an eTA, you need a visitor visa.

Canada’s eTA is valid for up to 5 years after the date of issue, or when your passport expires, whichever comes first. It enables you to enter the Great White North multiple times during its validity period, for visits of up to 6 months (180 days) each. To obtain the authorisation, you’ll need a currently valid passport. It’s recommended that you print a copy of your travel document, to take to the airport and show to the check-in staff just in case.

Canada’s government introduced the eTA in March 2016. Unlike traditional visas, which are paper and include your passport being stamped, your Canada travel document is electronically linked to your passport. When you apply, your information will be sent to Canada’s Department of Immigration, who’ll decide whether to approve your application. Once your application is approved, Byevisa will send you an email to confirm this. At the airport, the check-in staff will check your passport to see if you’re authorised to travel.

eTA Canada Application Process

To apply for a Canada tourist visa is straightforward with Byevisa. You’ll just need:

  1. Some personal information, like your name, nationality, date of birth, country of residence, passport number, plus your intended entry and exit dates.
  2. A current passport that’s valid for the duration of your proposed stay. However, the travel industry recommends that your passport have at least 6 months’ validity.
  3. A valid debit or credit card, so you can pay for your Byevisa eTA Canada application.
  4. An email address, so that we can tell you when your application is accepted, and to send you your eTA.

Even once you obtain your Canada eVisa, you’ll still have to take your passport to the airport, when you go to board your flight. This is because the airport check-in staff will check your passport electronically, to see if you’ve obtained your eTA. After all, it’s an electronic system that ties your passport number to your visa.

Your Canada eTA enables you to visit the country multiple times for 6 months (180 days) each, up to 5 years from your authorisation’s initial date. However, if your passport expires or you get a new one between your visa’s issue and expiry dates, you’ll have to get new travel authorisation too.

An advantage of the Canada tourist visa is that you don’t have to apply each time you visit the country. Instead, a single eTA is valid for up to 5 years from the date of issue. You can consult Byevisa’s visa checker here to see if you’re eligible for the authorisation. However, if you already have a valid visa, then you won’t need to apply to enter Canada.
