However, before you start planning your adventures in the world’s largest desert, there’s one important point to take into account: your entry visa.

Although this country does not currently offer an e-Visa, catching a glimpse of Africa’s Big 5 animals (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo) couldn’t be easier with Byevisa. Currently, 55 nationalities are eligible for visa-free travel to Namibia. The US, UK and many European nations are included in this list. Namibia Visa Application Process

To apply for a visa to this country, you need to follow a few simple steps:

  • Locate your nearest embassy or consulate. To do this, you can use our embassy finder tool here.
  • Make sure that your passport has at least 6 months validity from your planned date of entry, plus 3 blank pages.
  • Gather the necessary documents, including the application form and itinerary.
  • Present your application in person, via an authorised third party or through a courier.

In most cases, your passport must remain at the embassy while your application is processed, so try to avoid arranging any international travel during this period. In a few days, the embassy will return your passport with the visa stamp and you’re good to go: miles and miles of rugged Namibian scenery await you.

Namibia Visa Requirements and Eligibility

Citizens of 55 Namibia visa-free countries can enter hassle-free with just a completed immigration card when travelling for tourism. Here’s how as follows.

Upon arrival, you simply need to present a passport that is valid at least 6 months after your departure and a return ticket, to receive your entry stamp free of charge. This stamp allows you to enjoy up to 90 days of travel through Namibia’s deserts and historic cities within 1 calendar year.

Namibia Visa on Arrival

Meanwhile, nationals of the below countries and territories travelling for tourism can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Hosea Kutako International Airport:

  • Bulgaria
  • Czech Republic
  • Hungary
  • Poland
  • Romania
  • Slovakia

To request your VoA, make sure to prepare the following:

  • A passport that is valid for at least 6 months.
  • Proof of financial means demonstrated by a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a person in the country or your tour operator.
  • A return ticket.
  • Medical insurance covering your period of stay.
  • A completed visa application form. You can download this in advance from your embassy’s website. Find your nearest embassy here. Please note that the embassy in Vienna serves as the diplomatic mission for several countries, so be sure to check this before you apply.
  • A yellow fever certificate if you’ve travelled to a country where infections are present.
  • Supporting documents if you’re visiting for a business meeting or conference.

This document allows for a maximum stay of 90 days and costs 1080 NAD (Namibian dollars) or approximately 71 USD. The payment for the VoA must be made once in the country and cannot be paid beforehand, unlike with a normal visa. It is recommended that you carry this amount in cash, to prevent any holdups in immigration.

Namibia Visa Form and Documents

This travel document can be requested in 1 of 3 ways: (1) in person, (2) through an authorised individual (authorisation letter required), (3) or through a courier service arranged by the applicant. In all cases, your application must include the following:

  • The Namibia visa application form.
  • An original passport with 6 months validity from the date of entry and at least 3 blank pages.
  • 1 passport-size photo in colour and taken in front of a white background.
  • A copy of a round trip ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay.
  • Payment confirmation (payment should be made before applying – please check with your particular embassy or consulate for more details).
  • Documentation detailing the purpose and duration of the visit. Note that Multiple-Entry permits will be granted on the basis of reasonable grounds. If you hope to request this type of authorisation, be sure to explain how this fits into your travel plans.

To complete the application form, be sure to have this information at hand:

  • Your full name (including any former names, if applicable).
  • Passport information (number, date of issue, etc).
  • Current address and phone number.
  • University or employer’s name, address and contact information.
  • Information on any past visits to the country.
  • Name and address of family relatives in the country.
  • Detailed itinerary including the port of entry, dates of stay and accommodation.

How Much Does a Namibia Visa Cost?

Namibia visa fees vary depending on the embassy where you request your document. To give you an idea, here are the fees for entry permits requested from an embassy in the European Union:

For tourists

  • Single-Entry: 80 EUR
  • Multiple-Entry: 130 EUR
  • Express service: 220 EUR

For business travellers

  • Single-Entry: 105 EUR
  • Multiple-Entry: 150 USD

Transit authorisation: 50 USD

These fees should be paid by bank transfer directly to the embassy. Check their website for specific details on how to address the payment. When making the transfer, please include your name and the name of your travel agent, the type of visa you’re applying for (Single/Multiple, Tourist, Business, etc) and your country of origin.

These fees are non-refundable, so don’t forget to double-check all your documents and mind the details. These could make the difference between a successful application and an unsuccessful one.

On the other hand, if you’re a legal US resident (Green Card holder) hoping to apply for your document from the States, these are the fees you can expect to pay:
  • Single-Entry, 90-day validity: 50 USD
  • Multiple-Entry, 90-day validity: 100 USD
No, as UK citizens hoping to catch a glimpse of the Big 5 animals may do so with just a valid national passport. Entry is granted for up to 90 days per calendar year. Alternatively, legal UK residents applying through the Namibian High Commission in London can expect to pay the prices below:
  • Single-Entry, 90-day validity: 95 GBP (132 USD)
  • Multiple-Entry, 90-day validity: 125 GBP (173 USD)
Indian holidaymakers need to apply for a travel authorisation following the steps outlined above. In addition, you may be asked to provide a motivation letter stating the purpose and duration of the visit, and bank statements from the previous 3 months. The fees are below:
  • Single-Entry, 90-day validity: 2,600 INR (180 USD)
  • Multiple-Entry, 90-day validity: 5,200 INR (361 USD)
  • Transit: 2,600 INR (35 USD)
There is no need to print your travel authorisation as it will be affixed to your passport. However, it is a good idea to print your supporting documents such as your travel itinerary and proof of medical insurance.
If your travel authorisation is denied, the best thing to do is contact your embassy’s consular section for further information. You can greatly reduce the risk of this happening by carefully following the information outlined above.
To enter this country, either with a travel authorisation or through the visa-free scheme, your passport must be valid for the duration of your travel. If you plan on visiting in the near future, don’t forget to double-check your passport’s expiry date!
Dual citizens can apply in the same way or enter visa-free if one of your nationalities is eligible. Be sure to make all your bookings under that 1 passport to prevent confusion and possible delays.
English is the only official language in this country. However, the other languages spoken here reflect the country’s unique cultural heritage.

The San, Nama and Damara groups left their mark, as did the Bantu peoples. The country’s colonial past (it was a colony of the German Empire as well as under administration by the United Kingdom and South Africa) has also had an influence on the languages spoken.

This country, along with South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, is part of the Common Monetary Area, making the Namibian dollar 1:1 with the South African rand.

The South African rand is widely accepted throughout the country, which is definitely handy if you have some leftover currency from your travels to The Rainbow Nation.

The dry season from June to August is the best time to catch a glimpse of the Big 5, as animals concentrate around scarce water sources. During this time, expect clear sunny days with cooler (sometimes freezing) temperatures at night.

If you’re after different landscapes, the summer rains between November and April turn parts of the country into a lush green.

There is no official bus system here, but almost all major towns are connected by local buses. There is also the TransNamib train that mostly operates at night and makes a few stops across the country.

Car rentals are very popular and many vehicles come stocked with everything you need for a camping adventure. Be sure to book early, however, as these vehicles have been known to sell out quickly in the high season.

Citizens of visa-exempt countries can still enter without a travel permit and those needing a visa will still need to apply following the steps above. If you’re crossing in a rental car, be sure to hold proof of proper vehicle insurance.

A Visa on Arrival (VoA) is only an option available when arriving at the Hosea Kutako International Airport.
