All About the Vanuatu Visa

Deserted beaches, ancient culture and magma-filled volcanoes are within easy reach in Vanuatu. What’s more, this 80-plus island archipelago has an open visa policy. As such, many travellers – among them US, Australian, British and Japanese nationals – qualify for Vanuatu visa-free travel for up to 30 days within a 180-day period when you hold a valid passport.

Of course, even for travellers exempt from authorisations, it’s important to know what to expect when arriving at the airport and what information you’ll need. Vanuatu Visa Requirements and Eligibility

Currently, 120 nationalities are able to apply for a Vanuatu visa waiver directly at the airport.

In this case, there is no need to fill in an application beforehand. You’ll just need to present the immigration form distributed on your flight and show a passport with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page. Once these have been verified, your Visa upon Arrival (VoA) for Vanuatu will be stamped in your passport.

To see if you can travel to Vanuatu visa-free, you’ll first have to see if a few conditions apply to you:

  • You are not a prohibited immigrant (you have no record that would give immigration officials a reason to deny your entry).
  • You are not suffering from a contagious disease or a mental condition that would be a risk to the local community.
  • You have the financial means to support yourself and any dependents who are travelling with you.
  • You have a return ticket within 30 days of your arrival (or, if you are travelling to a 3rd country, make sure you have the proper authorisation to enter, as well).

Vanuatu Visa Application Process

To get your Republic of Vanuatu visa, there are a few main steps to follow:

  1. First, you’ll have to download the application checklist and form from the Department of Immigration and Passport Services website. Alternatively, you can find your nearest embassy online and download these forms from here. For help finding your embassy, try using our Embassy Finder Tool.
  2. Next, you’ll need to contact your embassy to request an appointment to apply for a visitor visa. Any person visiting this island nation for tourism or unpaid business purposes qualifies for this type of document.
  3. On the day of your appointment, you’ll need to present your passport (valid at least 6 months past your dates of travel and with at least 2 blank pages) along with other supporting documentation that demonstrates your intention to leave the country at the end of 30 days.
  4. Once this step is complete, all you have to do is wait. The embassy will contact you at the email indicated on your application when the process is complete. And that’s it! Pack your bags, charge your camera and get ready for 30 days of island fun.

Vanuatu Visa Application Form and Documents

Before attending your consular appointment, you’ll want to go through this checklist to make sure you have everything you need:

  • The dated and signed application form.
  • A certified copy of the bio page of your national passport and all used pages (i.e. pages with any kind of visa or stamp).
  • A return ticket that departs within 30 days of your arrival.
  • Evidence of funds or income to support your stay (approximately 360 USD per month).
  • Evidence of your genuine intention to depart the country within 30 days. This can be a letter from your employer confirming your annual leave, a letter of invitation from friends or family or any other information showing incentive to leave the country at the end of your stay (e.g. a letter from your university, proof of marriage and or children).
  • A certified translation if one of your documents is not in English, French or Bislama.

It’s recommended that you collect all of these documents plus 1 copy of each. To fill in your visitor permit application form, you’ll need this information:

  • The dates of your visit.
  • Your given and family names.
  • Your gender.
  • Your place and date of birth.
  • Your passport number, date and place of issue.
  • Information on any other nationalities (in the case that you hold more than one).
  • Your marital status and the name of your spouse.
  • Your address and contact number.
  • The reasons for your visit.
  • The address and contact number of your accommodation in Vanuatu.
  • Details about previous visits to this country.
  • Information about your mental and physical health.
  • Your employment status and contact details.
  • Evidence of funds.
  • The contact information of the friends or family who will be supporting/hosting you during your travels.

In addition, once you’ve boarded the plane en route to this tropical destination, you’ll be asked to fill in an immigration form. To complete this you’ll simply need your flight number, the address of your accommodation and your dates of travel. Be sure to bring a pen and fill in the form clearly, as this is the last step standing between you and your island getaway.

How Much Does a Vanuatu Visa Cost?

If you qualify for visa-free entry, the VoA will be stamped in your passport free of charge.

If you are not exempt, the Vanuatu visa fee is 3,600 VUV (Vanuatu vatu, approximately 33 USD). This amount should be paid to the embassy by money order or cashier’s cheque. For specific payment details, it’s a good idea to check with your particular consular section when making your visa appointment.

Visa to Vanuatu Status Check

If you are exempt from needing a travel authorisation, there’s no need to worry about your permit in advance. It will be issued upon arrival once you present your valid passport.

If you are applying for your pass through an embassy or consulate, you will have to follow up with the consular section directly for information on your status. In most cases, the main mode of communication with the embassies will be by email and they will let you know once your documents are available for pickup.

Both the VoA and consular authorisations will give you 30 days to explore the archipelago’s rugged islands and world-class diving sites. Keep in mind that this document is Single-Entry, and will expire the moment you leave the country, even if less than 30 days have passed.
If you qualify for exemption and can receive your VoA at the airport, there’s no need to worry. The entire process can be done upon arrival.

If you need to request an authorisation from an embassy, we would recommend contacting the consular section at least 3 months prior to your trip. This ensures that they have time to schedule you for an appointment and you have time to gather all of your documents.

Fortunately, if you’re looking for some more fun in the sun, you can extend your visitor permit by calling the nearest Immigration Office. The application form can be downloaded from the Vanuatu Immigration and Passport Services website and should be accompanied by:
  • Proof of a return flight.
  • A bank statement.
  • An Immigration bond.
  • Approval duration.
  • 2 passport-size photos.
  • A fee of 6,000 VUV (54 USD) for 4 months or 12,000 VUV (108 USD) for over 4 months.
  • A copy of the first page of your passport.
It’s important to plan ahead. If there’s any chance that you’ll stay longer than 30 days, it’s a good idea to get this process started early, as if you are caught overstaying your initial authorisation you will be subject to a fine.
No, Indian holidaymakers qualify for exemption and can therefore request their VoA directly upon arrival. This document will allow you 30 days of island hopping.
If you’re a Pakistani passport holder there’s no need to apply for a consular authorisation. Your VoA will be issued free of charge at the airport’s immigration centre upon arrival.
Nigerian visitors are exempt from applying for a consular visa. With just a valid passport and a return flight, you can request your 30-day VoA at the airport.
No, If you qualify for the visa exemption described above, then your authorisation stamp will be placed in your passport directly at the airport. It would be a good idea, however, to carry printed proof of your accommodation and return flight.

If you are applying through a consulate, then your passport will be returned to you with the authorisation sticker inside.

This process depends on your nationality and on the embassy where you apply. To be safe, expect that your passport will remain at the embassy for at least 2 weeks.
If your application is rejected, you should contact the embassy’s consular section for information on why and how to proceed.

In general, however, if you follow the instructions above and take care to fill in the application form completely and correctly, there should be little reason to worry about your request being denied.

All travellers must hold a passport that’s valid at least 6 months past their dates of travel. If your passport is due to expire sooner, it’s possible that your entry or authorisation request will be denied.
If one of your nationalities qualifies for exemption, then you may use this passport when travelling. We’d suggest that you make all your bookings on the same document, however, so as to avoid any confusion between the 2 documents.
