The Western Asian country of Iran was the heart of the ancient Persian empire. Today, it is a place that will steal your heart with its friendly people, historic cities and rich culture.
  • Officially the Islamic Republic of Iran and historically known as Persia, this is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the world. It borders Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
  • Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) is the main international airport of Tehran, the country’s capital city. It is located 30 kilometres southwest of the capital.
  • Do not underestimate Iran! It is home to an impressive 24 UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Shahr-i Sokhta (meaning burnt city), one of the wonders of the ancient world.
  • Languages: Persian is the official language of Iran. It is known locally as Farsi. Many other Indo-European languages are also spoken throughout the country.
  • The official currency is the rial, however, Iranians normally use the toman for everyday transactions. One toman is equal to 10 rials; for example, if your receipt says 2000 tomans, this is equivalent to 20,000 rials. 
  • Local weather: Iran has long hot summers and short cool winters. The Caspian Sea coast is milder and wetter. Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit.
